3 key ingredients of Thai gastronomy

Are you bored of the bad weather? Are you counting the days until summer when you can take your partner away on a trip? Don’t despair! With our Thai food, we can take you on a 10,000 km journey and you won’t even need to catch a plane.

To whet your appetite, here are 3 key ingredients that can be found in almost all Thai dishes, all of which you can sample in Caldea’s Asian restaurant.

Chillies 🌶️

Don’t worry! 😱 Not all Thai dishes are super spicy! In fact, Thai cuisine aims to find the balance between acidic, salty, sweet and spicy flavours. But this little spicy pepper is one of the country’s highlights. There are dishes that simply can’t be made without them, and it’s common to find containers of dried chilli flakes on Thai tables so they can be sprinkled on your food if you really want to test your mettle!

Tamarind paste

In the West we sometimes use stock cubes to add flavour to our sauces and dishes, in Thailand they use tamarind paste. This peanut-shaped date of Indian origin is made into a paste and added to curries, soups, sauces and even the famous Pad Thai to accentuate the flavours.

Rice🍚

And first place goes to… rice! More specifically, Jasmine Rice.

This grain is an essential part of Thai cuisine and is also the same as the verb to eat in Thai (“Kin Khaw” literally translates as “eat rice”). Whether it is fried, in soup or steamed, you will find rice in many of the specialities of Thai cuisine.

Have we made you hungry? Do you want to see how much spice you can handle? Come to CALDEA and sample our Thai cuisine!
