Hippocrates, the father of medicine, also used it to treat his patient\u2019s respiratory conditions. But the origins of true halotherapy can be traced to 19th century Poland, specifically the city of Wieliczka (just 14 kilometres from Krakow in the south of the country) which was famous for its salt mines and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978. During that period, it was noted that the salt miners did not suffer from respiratory conditions, in contrast to the rest of the population who did experience problems in this regard.<br \/>\nBased on this observation, and the popularity of the destination and its salt mines, scientific research was conducted in the \u201890s to confirm the existence of these benefits for the human body.
